Its first sculptor was Gutzon Borglum, a Klan member who later left the project and went on to carve Mount Rushmore.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGeorgia bought Stone Mountain in 1958, four years after Brown v. Board of Education, as the state fought federally mandated school integration. Work resumed on the Confederate memorial, and the carving was finally completed in 1972. Because what's on the rock is not the same as what the rock is.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe three riders are John Lewis, Martin Luther King Jr., and Andrew Young.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKing was born a few blocks from here, on Auburn Avenue, and preached at Ebenezer down the street from where he was baptized. Lewis represented Atlanta in Congress for 33 years, after Selma nearly killed him at 25.
