Redrawn Stone Mountain Tee

The rock is about 300 million years older than the state of Georgia.

The carving on its north face is considerably newer.

It was commissioned in 1915, the same year the second Ku Klux Klan reconstituted itself in a cross-burning on that exact summit. Its first sculptor was Gutzon Borglum, a Klan member who later left the project and went on to carve Mount Rushmore.

Georgia bought Stone Mountain in 1958, four years after Brown v. Board of Education, as the state fought federally mandated school integration. Work resumed on the Confederate memorial, and the carving was finally completed in 1972. State law still protects it today.

You've probably done the walk. Ridden the gondola. Hell, maybe you've even seen the redneck laser light show?

For this shirt, we wanted to imagine a different monument, so we redrew Stone Mountain's Confederate generals as Black civil rights leaders. The people who fought to move Georgia forward instead of keeping it in the past. Because what's on the rock is not the same as what the rock is.

The three riders are John Lewis, Martin Luther King Jr., and Andrew Young.

King was born a few blocks from here, on Auburn Avenue, and preached at Ebenezer down the street from where he was baptized. Lewis represented Atlanta in Congress for 33 years, after Selma nearly killed him at 25. Young ran the SCLC, went to the UN as ambassador, then came home and served two terms as mayor.

Three men who spent their lives moving Georgia forward, put where three men who fought to keep it in the past have been carved since 1972.
